June 15 to 17, Teledyne CARIS' Paul Cooper and Charles de Jongh attended the General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean (GEBCO) Forum on the Future of Ocean Mapping (FFOFM). This was a three-day international event held in the Principality of Monaco, which brought together more than 200 ocean experts from around the world. The goal of the event was to accelerate the ability to accurately portray the shape of the world's ocean floor.
Opened by Prince Albert II of Monaco, the FFOFM provided a venue for representatives from groups involved in ocean related fields to exchange ideas and strategies for mapping the gaps in the world's ocean depth data. GEBCO, a joint project of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, was co-hosting the Forum with the Nippon Foundation.
Paul and Charles were able to highlight the topic of Variable Resolution surfaces, its application to ocean floor mapping, and how it will soon be incorporated within CARIS software in the near future.
GEBCO is the only international project with a mandate to map the ocean floor of the entire world. Visit http://www.gebco.net/about_us/overview/ for more information.
