CARIS is very pleased to announce that Dr. Salem Masry, Founder, President and CEO of CARIS, has been appointed to the Order of Canada for his contributions as an innovator and entrepreneur in the fields of geographical information and digital mapping technology.
Dr. Masry completed his PhD studies in photogrammetry and surveying at University College London, England. He then immigrated to Canada in 1966 and joined the University of New Brunswick (UNB) as a Research Associate. In 1970, he became an Assistant Professor. In 1975, he initiated a series of graduate and undergraduate courses in digital mapping, which became the basis for UNB's GIS Program. He became a full professor in 1979, the same year he founded CARIS to take on industrial projects outside the mandate of the university. He left UNB in 1982. The company flourished in the years that followed, becoming a world leader in GIS software.
The Order of Canada is one of Canada’s highest civilian honours. It was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
